Deparement of Rheumatology and Immunology
The Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, Peking
University People's Hospital, is one of the first
rheumatology centers established in China (1983) and is a
key discipline of the Ministry of Education(Clinical
Immunology). Currently, there are more than 50 research
and clinical members, including 8 Professors and
A/Professors, 6 Attending physicians, 3 residents, 15
nurses, 5 laboratory staffs and over 30 PhD, Master and
Post-doctoral researchers.
Professor Li Zhanguo, Chief of the Department, is the Vice
President of Asia Pacific League of Association for
Rheumatology (APLAR), President-elect of Chinese
Rheumatology Association (CRA), Vice President of Clinical
Immunology Association of China, Chief-Editor of Chinese
Journal of Rheumatology, Associate-Editor of International
Journal of Rheumatic disease (IJRD, English), Board Members
of the National Science Foundation, and Board Members of
Sino-Food Drug Administration (SFDA). Three Professors are
the members of The Youth Working Committee of Chinese
Rheumatology Association. Several Professors are
respectively the reviewer or Editor Board Members of “Scand
J Immunol”, “Clin Rheumtol”, “Lupus”, “Chi Med J (English
edition)”, “Chi J Intern Med”, “Chi Med J”, “Chi J Rheumatol”
and “Chi J Pract Intern Med”.
The department is one of the largest Rheumatology and
Immunology center in China.There are some 40 thousand
out-patients per year with 36 in-patient beds in the
department. We have developed more than 20 new
serological and genetic markers in diagnosis of rheumatic
diseases. More than 10 novel immune-based therapies have
been used in refractory rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus
erythematosus and Sjogren Syndrome, including T cell
vaccination for SLE, immune ablation (such as
immune-adsorption, double plasma filtration etc.) for RA,
SLE and Sjogren syndrome. The other therapies include small
pulse cyclophosphamide therapy for SLE, SS and PM, 99Tc-MDP
and many bioagents (Enternercept, Remicade) for RA. Some of
these diagnostic and therapeutic approaches were the first
developed in China or in the world.
The Department of Rheumatology and Immunology is one of
the most recognized center in the country in clinics and
research. In the last several years, 20 national and local
government research projects and programs have been granted
to this department with over ¥20 millions (US$ 3,000,000).
These were mainly funded by Key Projects in the National
Science&Technology Program during the 11 Five-Year Plan
Period, “863” project, National Outstanding Youth Foundation
and National Science Foundation. The staff has published
over 300 papers, including 40 English papers. The
department won quite a number of academic achievement awards
both in China and aboard, like Chinese Medical Technology
Progress Award (silver prize). The department is applying
for 7 state patents, and won 1 demestic and international
patent respectively.
The Department of Rheumatology and Immunology has
established a wide range of cooperation at home and abroad.
It has taken a number of visiting rheumatology fellows and
researchers from all over the country and overseas for
advanced clinical and lab training. The department has
hosted many visiting Professors and rheumatologists from the
USA, Australia , UK , Switzerland, Canada, Norway and Japan
etc.
